Apart from the muddy months of March and April, there's hardly any off-season for tourism in Stowe, Vermont. Locals shake their heads in wonder and say that summers are growing even busier than winters, and fall foliage season keeps the cars snaking up Mountain Road toward Mount Mansfield well into October. Perhaps this is why the town can sustain so many terrific restaurants. Whether you're looking for an après-ski feast or light picnic fare, you're in the right place. - Amy Traverso
Michael's on the Hill
For all the delicious food in Vermont, it's still rare to find highly ambitious three- or four-star restaurants in the small towns. Quite the opposite is true in Europe, so perhaps it's no surprise that Swiss-born chef/owner Michael Kloeti - formerly of Lespinasse in New York - has set the bar so high for his eponymous restaurant in Waterbury Center, just south of Stowe. The extensive menu begins with great European comfort food and then burnishes everything to a glossy finish. Don't miss the chef's venison or the homemade gnocchi. Open for dinner. Price: expensive. Rte. 100, Waterbury Center. 802-244-7476. www.michaelsonthehill.com
